Fidya & Kaffarah
Compensation for breaking or missing fasts
What is Fidya?
Fidya is compensation paid by those who are unable to fast or pray Salah due to illness, old age or being deceased. It is also compensation for making minor mistakes during Hajj. Fidya is the same amount as Sadaqah al-Fitr.
A person who cannot fast is required to provide one person with two meals, for each day that a fast is missed. The cost of a meal is £2.20, so for a single missed fast the amount payable is £4.40 and a total of £132 for the whole month of Ramadhan.
What is Kaffarah?
Kaffarah is made for fasts missed unnecessarily – for example, if someone misses or breaks a fast in the month of Ramadhan without a valid reason. To make up for the missed or broken fast, a person must fast continuously for 60 days. If they are unable to do that, they have to give a charitable compensation for the cost of an average meal for 60 poor people.
A person who deliberately breaks his fast is required to provide one person with two meals, for 60 days. The Kaffarah rate is £4.40 per person, amounting to £264 for each missed or intentionally broken fast.
Paying a Kaffarah is also necessary in Islam for breaking a promise or an oath.
