Sadaqah Jariyah is ongoing charity (continuous reward) received by us (for good actions and deeds), that will not only benefit us in this life, but will continue to benefit us after our death.

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger (SalAllahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying:

When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious Child, who prays for him (for the deceased). [Sahih Muslim]

For those who are unable to fast due to difficulty (elderly, terminally ill, etc.) and do not have hope of being able to make up the fasts, compensation must be given by feeding a poor person per missed fast.

What is Kaffarah?

Kafaarah is due on a person who breaks their fast intentionally, e.g by eating or drinking without a valid reason. Kaffaarah is a penalty paid by fasting 60 consecutive days. If this is not possible then Give 60 poor persons 3.5 lbs. (approx. 1.6 kg.) of wheat or its value in cash or food. For more details speak to an alim.

Please Note: The person still needs to make up the fast of Ramadan, which they broke, as the Kaffaarah does not cover the Qadaa.

What is Sadaqatul Fitra?

Fitr means to break fast or to refrain from fasting. Hence the Eid after the fasts of Ramadhaan is called Eid al-Fitr, as it marks the completion of fasting.

On this occasion of happiness, as a sign of gratitude one has to give a specific amount in alms, which is called Sadaqatul Fitr. This is to purify and obtain complete blessings for the fasts of Ramadhan.

Please note: It is Wajib to give Sadaqatul Fitr.

Why should I donate?

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported: Allah’s Messenger (SalAllahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying:

He who called (people) to righteousness, there would be reward (assured) for him like the rewards of those who adhered to it, without their rewards being diminished in any respect. [Sahih Muslim]

“The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allah gives manifold increase to whom He pleases. And Allah is All-Sufficient, All-Knower.” [Al-Baqarah 2:261]
