Sadaqah al-Fitr
Charity to purify the fasting person
What is Sadaqah al-Fitr?
Sadaqah al-Fitr is a specific form of charity that is given to the poor towards the end of Ramadhan or before Eid Salah.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) prescribed it as purification of the fasting from idle talk and obscenities and as food for the poor. Accordingly, it is important to ensure that your Sadaqah al-Fitr reaches the poor people by Eid day.
Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) ordained Zakah al-Fitr (Sadaqah al-Fitr or Fitrana) to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy.” Various commodities are mentioned in Hadith. Donors should give Sadaqah al-Fitr according to their capability and affluent Muslims are advised to give the higher standards. Please consult with your local Imams and Ulama for further advice.
